NDI ANAMBRA WITH DISABILITIES CELEBRATES WORLD DISABILITY DAY IN GRAND STYLE AS GOVERNOR OBIANO ESTABLISHES DISABILITY RIGHT COMMISSION.

The Disability Community has celebrated this year's International Day of Persons With Disabilities in high spirit as Governor Willie Obiano ordered the immediate establishment of the Disability Right Commission in Awka.
Disclosing this in a Media Chat held at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka on Friday 3 December 2021, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barrister Chukwuka Ezewuzie said that the establishment of the Disability Right Commission in Anambra was to consolidate on the various achievements of Governor Willie Obiano for the Disability Community.
"The Governor has put in place this cooperate body with perpetual existence, which will continue to ensure that persons with disabilities in Anambra State are treated like their counterparts in the developed countries and commences work immediately.
"This move also aligned with the United Nations Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities."This Commission is to oversee the full implementation of the State Disability Rights Law passed and accented to law by the Governor Willie Obiano in 2018".
The Commission will have as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Barr Chuks Ezewuzie, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Disability Matters with other members appointed in line with sections 4(1)of the Disability Rights Law.
Delivery his speech on the significance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities the Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Ugochukwu Ernest. C Okeke explained that the day aimed to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilized support for the dignity, rights and we'll being of persons with disabilities.
"The theme emphasize on the need to create enabling environment for the involvement of persons with disabilities in leadership aspirations and also highlights the challenges that prevent persons with disabilities from participating actively in the society.
Comr. Okeke also expressed happiness over the establishment of the Disability Right Commission.
"The governor has once again giving us an unforgettable Christmas gift, that will remain evergreen in our hearts.
"This is the climax of all the success stories recorded by this administration for the Disability Community"
The State Coordinator of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, Mrs. Josephine Onah in her goodwill message, congratulated the disability community on the achievement so far and commended the state government for the establishment of the commission.
"The main work now begins with getting stakeholders to explore the provisions of the Law to ensure that a better life is secured for persons with disabilities in the state." She said.
The coordinator of Anambra State Association of Women with Disabilities, Miss Nwanokwara Ncheta and the chairperson Anambra State Albinism Association (ASAA), Miss Vivian Ezeonwumelu gave a joint lecture on Women and Disability, Gender Based Violence Prospective.
The chairman of Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) Mr. Amobi Nwagwu and the coordinator of Visual Service at the Office of the Governor on Disability Matters, Miss Maryjane Umezinwa together delivered a lecture on the Success Stories and Challenges Experienced by the Disability Community in the state.
This year's celebration was collaborative effort of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Anambra State Chapter, Office of the Governor on Disability Matters (OGDM) and Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
The Director of Rehab, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Anthonia Obianyo,heads and selected members of different Disability Clusters all attended the event.
